Recently I went to Tokyo, OK 2023. Which is a convention in Tulsa, OK that used to be called Tokyo in Tulsa, but ever since it changed management hands the name has changed. This convention used to be HUGE in the state, but unfortunately, a few years back there was a fated time we refer to as "Hobby Lobby Con" in which the convention center was in repair and they put the artists of the convention in a literal unused Hobby Lobby craft store building with minimal lighting. No; this is for real.
Anyway, in the last couple years it's been alright. They're rebuilding themselves from the ground up. Overall, this year was more fun, but I also have great friends to enjoy the time with!
I recently watched the Into the Spiderverse animated movie. I am absolutely in love with Johnathon Ohnn/The Spot. He's my type of character! Poor guy was in the wrong "spot" at the wrong time.... (hehe) My companion for this particular convention was a Spot figure I bought at Walmart. It's very fun sized, and good quality for about ten bucks. He doesn't have elbow or knee joints, and yet... he can do this:
Spot became the weekend cheerleader for the Street Candy Official Alt Fashion booth I was working at with friends this weekend. In the end, lots of people loved him and his pop and lockin'. LMAO.
I kind of with he was SLIGHTLY smaller so he would fit in my bags better, but then he wouldn't stand out as much. So maybe he's perfect the way he is.
As for the convention itself. At least it's seeming to be... on its way back up. Still not great, but they did bring a very fun idol from Japan, and I even hosted my first Nostalgia Toy Meetup/Swap... I think maybe 5 people came, but hey that's more than I thought would! I'm happy! There were shuttle busses that were actually airconditioned as well. The drawbacks of the convention though, was that I found it kind of stink that they broke it up into different locations. It made the shopping area, which was at the Cox Convention Center, seem super dead and spread out. I hope they eventually move it all back over. But who knows.
To complete the whole ordeal I did also cosplay the human version (Pre Spottified) Dr. Johnathon Ohnn!
