It'sa Me! It's 2023, and we finally have an animated official Super Mario Brothers movie! I've been a big fan of Mario stuff in general for... well probably since my first video game! Which was either Duck Hunt or the first Super Mario Bros. I think they came on one of those Super Nintendo games with two on one cartridge?
In truth, that old Duck Hunt game used to make me cry because the dog would laugh at you when you missed. lmao.
ANYWAY, I love the 80s live action Mario movie, despite what others think of it. I think it's fun! They were going off a little 8bit. I also enjoyed the old Super Mario Super Show! Now that was... extra goofy, but FUN. I'm a big Koopa Kid fan.
I was admittedly a little worried about this new movie. Well...
nervousited. I knew it would be enjoyable, but I was a little worried about some of the cast's portrayals. I was also wondering what sort of story they would go for... would the Mario Bros already be in the Mushroom Kingdom? Would they come from Brooklyn?
Well read no further if you don't want to know, but the Brothers WERE from Brooklyn and even sported the "wahoos" for their little plumbing commercial. They even gave the brothers a whole family to give Mario a daddy complex since his father doesn't think he's doing the smart thing and bringing his brother down with him. Of course we know that's not how it ends.
Mario and Luigi get sucked into the Mushroom Kingdom and separated after literally saying that "nothing can stop them if they're together." Of course.
But it's ok. Of course Mario is going to stop at nothing to save Luigi! (which he calls him by his nickname Lou a lot of the movie, and that's just adorable) We spend the movie jumping around from both the brothers and Bowser, who eventually captures Luigi. We even get to see the Kongs! Supposedly in this world they exist in the Jungle Kingdom near the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario and Peach try to gain their allegiance and in turn, Mario has to challenge Donkey Kong, who is the king Cranky's son. The Kongs also seem to be quite good at mechanics and a Mario Kart scene ensues.
One of my favorite things about this movie is their portrayal of Bowser. This version of him feels right out out of Mario Odyssey combined with Paper Mario. He is, as he should be, very in love with Peach. He even wears the Odyssey wedding outfit when he tries to marry the princess.
Overall, without just saying the whole plot of this movie, I think it was super fun and gave a nice spin to the Mario franchise!! It also had SO many easter egg references. One of my favorites was the pizzeria in Brooklyn they were at was called "Punch-Out Pizzeria" and had pictures of the Punch-Out boxers on the wall. My fav has always been Glass Joe~
Mario was playing Kid Icarus in his bedroom too. :) They really squished so many things into an hour and thirty mins. They even had the frightening GIANT EEL from the games in the movie, and Peach's castle really was like in Mario 64. King Bombomb and King Boo were even seen at Bowser's wedding!
As you can see, I took Luigi with me to see this movie. He was one of the new merch pieces made for this movie! Luigi is my fav brother, but I might be a little biased. haha.
I was supposed to see this film with my friends, but some family medical emergency changed where I was staying at the time. I saw the movie at one of my smaller local theaters where I'm from, but that's ok! I didn't have to share the theater with many people, and it gave me ample time to stay after the credits to see the teaser for.... YOSHI! Of course they're gonna make another movie. I can't wait! Mamma Mia.
